The Romanian Government has approved the National Strategy relating to climate change and economic development. The Strategy revolves around the production of low carbon emissions between 2016-2020 and the National Action Plan for implementing the strategy.

The aim is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions arising from economic activities and facilitate adaptation to climate change.

The National Strategy represents an update and an extension of the previous national strategy drafted for the same purposes. Two significant issues have been addressed within the new strategy: (i) the financing of low gas emissions development (known as “green development”), and (ii) monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.

The new strategy is in line with the Romanian commitments towards the European Union on minimizing the impact of climate change, namely the decrease of greenhouse gas emissions by 40% and a 27% increase in energy efficiency by 2030.
