Simona Halep makes history in tennis and becomes 25th WTA World No. 1

Simona Halep wrote history in October by becoming world number one at the 25th WTA World Competition after beating Jelena Ostapenko. Simona beat the teenager 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals in the China Open in Beijing.

The 26-year-old becomes the first player representing Romania to achieve this historic milestone since the computer rankings were introduced in 1975, and she will be the 25th woman overall to hold the No.1 ranking.

Simona displayed great form during the Beijing competition. She managed to finally beat Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 and also Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1.
This was the first time Simona had played in the Beijing semifinals.

Simona was presented with the WTA World No.1 Trophy, the focal point of which is a silver “star-map” tennis ball that represents the tennis universe. All World No.1’s, past and present, are depicted by a diamond in the sky that, represents each champion’s mark on the sport.

As she says, her next dream is to win a Grand Slam. 2018 will be an interesting year for her as she tries to capitalise on her form and defeat the pool of opponents, from the likes of Muguruza and Petra Kvitova to veterans like Sharapova and Serena Williams.
